Claudia Schmedding and Andreas Lehmann have enriched flatware culture by augmenting it with “added functional value.” The handles of their “Haptic” flatware are made from 6 by 3 mm bars of stainless steel that have been bent 180° around a three-millimeter radius. This creates open ends and an elastic effect which invites playful handling. The stainless steel is just stiff enough to offer pleasantly springy resistance when the flatware is used. The empty space (6 mm wide) between the two parallel components of the handle makes this architectonically inspired flatware easier to grasp. Well-matched minimalistic shapes enhance the appeal of the set, which consists of a knife, a fork, a soupspoon and a teaspoon.
