Young I Kim has deprived her sphere-shaped copper bowls of their original function and, by “filling them with poetry”, has turned them into works of art. Her handcrafted “Characterized Vessels”, as she calls them, interpret human characteristics that Young I Kim observed in her friends. The vessels’ distinct and irregular shapes are accentuated by the intense, monochrome color of the enamel coating. Young I Kim uses four to six layers of enamel, each of which is fired and then carefully polished before the next one is applied. To conclude the enameling process she applies a protective wax coating. The slightly jagged edge makes for an exciting contrast to the vessel’s round shape and is supposed to provide an “insight into the soul”. Young I Kim’s work was honored in January 2010 with the sponsorship award for promising young designers of Hanover’s Handwerksforum (Crafts Forum). Since October 2009 her objects have been exhibited in the public collection of the Grassi Museum in Leipzig.
