Many materials are thrown away after having been used and end up on a garbage dump. So it’s no wonder that on average, every German produces half a ton of waste per year, including many things that could easily be reused. This theme will be highlighted by Handwerksform Hannover in its first 2012 exhibition.

42 Applied Arts artists from Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden will show how exciting it can be to recycle or reuse materials. Used paper, for example, can serve as a basic material for bags or as a new surface for small pieces of furniture. Video films, bicycle tubes or computer parts have been reworked into pieces of jewelry. Recovered glass, enhanced by silver, is given a second lease on life as a vessel, and discarded textiles perform new functions as bags or jewelry. The most different materials have been used by these artists, starting from very common ones such as paper, glass, yogurt lids, erasers or computer parts to rather unusual ones such as eyeglasses frames, tombstones, air mattresses, baking pans and cake molds, or even leather trousers.
