20th Century Modernism

R 20th Century Gallery, New York, is participating in SF20, San Francisco 20th Century Modernism, September 17–19, featuring vintage Brazilian masterpieces by Joaquim Tenreiro and Sergio Rodrigues and exceptional new work by Korean designer Hun-Chung Lee and Americans David Wiseman and Jeff Zimmerman.
Joaquim Tenreiro was the pioneer of modernist Brazilian furniture making. His exquisitely crafted pieces from the 1940s-1960s evoke a refined coexistence of traditional values and modern aesthetics, strongly bound to the cultural milieu. (Curved sofa with upholstered seat and back and jacaranda frame, circa 1950.)

LA-based David Wiseman captures and preserves the fleeting beauty of natural forms in his unique objects and custom-designed commissions. Wiseman’s deep appreciation for the subtle textures and details present in nature make his design projects an intimate opportunity to experience these wonders the way he sees them. (Unique concave “Marine” facet vase in porcelain, 2010.)

Jeff Zimmerman is a master glass blower and artist in New York who has exhibited and installed his works around the world. His elegant and seemingly simple pieces, influenced by organic shapes, belie the creativity and technique he employs in taking glass where no one else has before. (Sculptural “Crumpled” vessel in translucent hand-blown glass, 2009.)

Hun-Chung Lee creates magnificent, unique ceramic stools and objects in which the seemingly chaotic pattern of glaze belies his careful, painterly control of palette that emerges upon closer observation. In Lee’s hands, the solid ceramics take on a soft, almost cloud-like character. After receiving his BFA and MFA in ceramic sculpture from Hongik University in Seoul, he came to the United States to obtain a second MFA in sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute.
