Birgit Laken, necklace “Hoya Camosa 3a”, silver, acrylic paint, textile 2008.

Birgit Laken in Galerie Orfèo with “Summerland”, jewellery and photography. October 8th until November 14th 2010. Orfèo mainly shows the work that is inspired by the wax flower Hoya Camosa.

That all began when Birgit Laken stayed at the house of a colleague where was hanging a huge wax flower plant in the bathroom, giving off a very sweet smell. The beautiful buttons looking like little sweeties, suddenly were open; changed in very white flowers with pink heart and a drop of perfume aside of the heart.

Birgit Laken: “This metamorphose happens at night, my colleague never have seen this process. These buttons and flowers, the opening process, the smelly drops, inspired me to make these jewellery pieces. I had to photograph them standing into the bath, wringing myself in all kind of strange positions to make good pictures that still could inspire me later and lead me on the search for how to express the experiences I had with this plant. The fact that the leaves, hidden into the button, suddenly being unfold next morning, intrigued me. By looking to the images, enlarged on my computer, the leaves of the flowers looked like little woolly carpets. This made me decide to make the white flower necklace with textile, combined with painted acrylic, which was very new for me.

The idea of the smelly drops I expressed in the black brooch with falling off rock-crystal.
I tried to work out all the ideas I had got by this wonderfully Hoya Camosa plant’.
