For Claudia Römer, the value of a piece of jewelry is the result of its formal idiom and the symbolism of the material(s) chosen. To achieve this, this designer sometimes ventures on very unusual paths. In 1997, for example, she created some inventive necklaces from “cheerfully colorful” erasers that she found in a shop in Berlin. By now she combines erasers from all over the world which she either finds or people send to her. She has also developed another of her themes while experimenting with silver clay, a material that can be modeled like normal clay. What remains after firing these pieces in the kiln is the pure, sintered silver. “Jewelry must be innovative,” Claudia Römer says, “it should not be subject to any fashion.” This equally applies to her eraser necklaces and the pieces she crafts from silver clay with their amorphous and at the same time minimalist shapes.
