For Claudia Römer, the value of a piece of jewelry is the result of its formal idiom and the symbolism of the material(s) chosen. To achieve this, this designer sometimes ventures on very unusual paths. In 1997, for example, she created some inventive necklaces from “cheerfully colorful” erasers that she found in a shop in Berlin. By now she combines erasers from all over the world which she either finds or people send to her. Her new collection features papyrus discs closely strung together on a cord. These circular, oval or heart-shaped discs, each of which she cuts individually by means of state-of-the art laser technology, may all have the same size or gradually vary in size when aligned on the cord, thus making for an interesting overall shape. “Jewelry must be innovative,” Claudia Römer says, “it should not be subject to any fashion.” This equally applies to her eraser necklaces and her new papyrus pieces.
