In her pieces of jewelry, Christina Pauls skillfully unites techniques, materials and motifs used in textile design with those of the goldsmith’s art. The idea for her “Lochwerk” (Perforated Works) collection is based on her graduation project entitled “Der rote Faden” (The Red Thread). Small holes remind the beholder of an embroidery pattern, but he or she can also detect what looks like the facets of a cut gemstone. The basic shapes of her “Nadelwerk” (Needleworks) collection are perforated silver or yellow gold ovals which this designer embroiders so as to obtain geometrical or imaginative ornaments. They have been christened with the names of women from various cultures who inspired Pauls to create the respective piece. The “Needleworks” bangles are made of a slender silver or gold band that surrounds the wearer’s wrist in a single or double loop and is held together by no more than one or two stitches.
